Funeral Potatoes

I'm making funeral potatoes and had to do a quick search for oven temp. I thought this was pretty hilarious:

I’ve had some requests for my funeral potato recipe, because my funeral potatoes rock! Just be warned, this is a traditional Utah Mormon dish, thus it is a difficult process requiring great skill and patience, only the freshest of ingredients, and yielding a highly nutritious and aesthetically pleasing result.

It is essential that you follow each of these complex steps to the letter!

First, lock your twelve kids in the backyard with a hose and some nerf balls.

Use a mixer to beat together a big tub of sour cream, two cans of cream of mushroom soup, and a brick of cream cheese.

Stir in several big hand-fulls of grated cheddar cheese and two bags of O’Brian Diced (not shredded–too mushy) Hashbrowns.

Dump into a large cake pan.

Sprinkle some more cheese then a bunch of crushed Corn Flakes for the top. (Special K will work in a pinch, it’s a proven fact.)

Bake at 350 until it starts to smell really good and the middle is hot.

Serve with watery ham, fluffy white rolls, green jello, and a big sack of salad with ranch dressing.

I'd take offense but it's too true! I do no measuring. I've cut up a ham steak to put into it. Never heard of the cream cheese. I totally skip the cornflakes because, ewww. My potatoes are fresh. I may be exed but I hate green jello. I can't bake rolls *tear*
I almost forgot to post her link! I think it's a site I need to explore. Oh, and I have 2 kids. I used to have 12 but I locked them outside with a hose and some Nerf balls and.... TOTALLY KIDDING! I had the good sense to know my limits. 2 kids.

My experience with my daughter's school and the President's address.

Although I spoke to the school district and they assured me that the kids WILL be able to watch President Obama's speech my youngest daughter's Principal said that they will not be showing it live. Read his letter here (I edited names and places to protect my daughter):

Parents, I am sure most of you are aware that President Obama has asked to be able to speak to the youth of America on Tuesday morning, September 8th. This is not an unusual request. President George Bush (the 1st) spoke to students on a nationally televised broadcast during his administration. However, some have expressed concern about this “captive” format and what might be said. For this reason, XXMS will not be broadcasting this program live. We will, however, be recording it and if we feel the content is something beneficial to our students and is nonpartisan we will be showing it on Tuesday morning, September 15th. If any parents object to having their child view it they need to contact the office and let us know. Parents are welcome to come the morning of the 15th to watch it with their child. I will NOT be requiring teachers to use the Classroom Activities outlined by the USDE (United States Department of Education). If you have any questions or concerns please give me a call. Thanks. Conrad

I had the privilege of campaigning AND voting of the President of our Country. I did NOT have a choice in who is Principal and Vice Principal of [name of school], unfortunately. Exactly what makes YOU qualified to decide whether or not the students at XXMS can benefit from the words of our country's President? I called the School District and was assured that my children would be allowed to watch him speak AS he speaks. There was no mention of communistic censorship. I am aware that some parents will opt out of their children watching the broadcast. Apparently I need to keep my child home from school so her education isn't effected by your prejudice. I hope that this isn't a reoccurring problem there.

President George H.W. Bush's 1991 speech to our nation's school children. I wasn't even married yet, so I'm not sure if there were people who freaked out and made the decision for entire schools the they would NOT have an opportunity to watch, thus giving the children an early taste of Communism.

So there is an update on Jason Linkins blog entitled: Obama Schoolchildren Speech Drives Right-Wing Batty. The post in it's entirety is below. I highly recommend reading it directly from his blog. In any case, I think it's unfair to make a decision for the children in these school that could be counter to their parent's wishes. The address is optional. Parents can request that their children be excused but to take away the option is suppression. Communism, so to speak. Here's the update:

UPDATE, 8:17 P.M. EST: ABC News is reporting that some school districts in six states (Texas, Illinois, Virginia, Wisconsin, Missouri and Minnesota), are refusing to air President Obama's speech to students.

I believe I've mentioned that in high school the superintendent forbid my biology teacher to teach us about evolution. In fact, we were told to rip the entire chapter from our text books. I wish I had had the courage then to confront the school board and demand my right to a complete education. It's insulting to me that I wasn't given the opportunity to process ALL of the information on my own. It's also ignorant to dismiss evolution. It IS a fact and eventually you have to leave the bubble of censorship. I went to college with my mind long set on a biology major. I already had voraciously studied the subject on my own. I was fine, but the choice should NOT have been a personal one made by someone who abused his power. I will be displeased if my daughter(s) are not given the opportunity to watch the address. VERY displeased.

Obama Schoolchildren Speech Drives Right-Wing Batty


Yesterday, I noted that Florida's GOP Chair Jim Greer had heard about President Barack Obama's intention to address the schoolchildren of America on the occasion of the start of a new school year, and went quite mental, warning darkly that the address was nothing more than a dastardly inculcation into socialism and a viral spread of liberal propaganda. Naively, I imagined this would be a derangement confined to a few weird nobodies, but, duh, I forgot: everyone is crazy now. So, this matter has thus become a Thing. Let's dispense with the highlights!

Glenn Beck hit this early, in a hurry, announcing that he would be countering Obama's address by airing a "special one-hour broadcast next Tuesday on television on the indoctrination of your children." Naturally, new wacko-target Van Jones figured into Beck's remarks, along with a warning that the "republic is under attack" from a video that encourages kids to do homework and stuff:


The National Review's Mark Steyn told Rush Limbaugh's audience Wednesday that the video address was Obama's attempt to extend his "cult of personality." It should be noted that Steyn was willing to concede that the tactics didn't quite rise to the level of Saddam Hussein. Restraint! The conservative fringe may paradoxically refer to Obama as a socialist or a fascist, depending on the direction the wind is blowing that day, but they've thus far drawn the line at Baathist.


Newsbusters' Mark Finkelstein likened the move to Maoist China, the regime that taught Dick Cheney how to stop worrying and love the waterboard!

Say, here's an idea. Pres. Obama's quotations on a variety of topics could be assembled in a small book, and every citizen given one -- free of course -- by the government. Citizens would then be encouraged to meet and discuss "what can we infer the President believes is important" in every aspect of life.

Right, or, you know, alternately, the White House could just do a video where the President talks about the importance of setting educational goals and advises against dropping out of school.

Michelle Malkin worried that for the first time in human history, schoolchildren would be motivated hypnotically to rise up and seize the means of production through the assignment of pointless busywork:

So when the Department of Education directs schools to gather children 'round the TV monitors for Obama's pep talk and then do this...


* Create posters of their goals. Posters could be formatted in quadrants or puzzle pieces or trails marked with the labels: personal, academic, community, country. Each area could be labeled with three steps for achieving goals in those areas. It might make sense to focus on personal and academic so community and country goals come more readily.

* Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.

...parents have every right to worry about their children being used as Political Guinea Pigs for Change.

No, Michelle, they pretty much don't! If we could all think practically for a moment, let me tell you how all of that stuff is going to play out. Students will be invited to maybe do some of this work, but within 24 hours, it will all be mostly forgotten about and never brought up again. Students will be concentrating on the actual schoolwork for which they receive actual grades. Teachers won't have the time to monitor the progress of any of this because they'll be too busy teaching to a battery of evaluation tests, to save their jobs and their schools' funding. A few students, real brownnosey types, might follow through with these ancillary assignments because they figure that doing so might help them get into college. They'll be wrong about that.

Oh, and there are also examples of fringey types equating the outreach effort to the Civilian National Security Force and "Hitler youth brigades" and admonishing, "Leave our kids alone!" It's like the right wing blogosphere went home, dosed themselves with mescaline and sat around watching History Channel reruns on mute while Pink Floyd's The Wall played in the background.

And now, conservatives are encouraging parents to keep their kids home from school that day. From Newsmax:

The fascist in chief is taking his special brand of brainwashing to the classroom. Keep your kids home. I think this man is a threat to our basic unalienable rights. I don't want him indoctrinating my children. Seriously.

Anyway, here are a lot of actual facts, that Jake Tapper rounded up by doing sensible reporting.

The part of the busywork materials that scared so many right-wingers, where kids are encouraged to "Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president," has been changed. Instead, kids are encouraged to "Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short‐term and long‐term education goals." Tapper reports: "The idea, [White House spokesman Tommy] Vietor said, was that students should think of how they could help the President in terms of reducing the national dropout rate."

And the content of the speech? Uhm...it's all pretty innocuous, actually!

"The goal of the speech and the lesson plans is to challenge students to work hard in school, to not drop out and to meet short-term goals like behaving in class, doing their homework and goals that parents and teachers alike can agree are noble," a White House spokesman tells ABC News, "This isn't a policy speech. This is a speech designed to encourage kids to stay in school."

And the kicker? Watching the speech will be an optional activity. You know... like so many other aspects of totalitarian regimes!

Anyway, that's the state of the world today. If President Obama reminded people tomorrow to brush between meals, thousands of people would allow their teeth to rot right out of their heads, because OMGZ TEH SOCIALISM! The upside to all of this is that after Tuesday, every teacher in the world will know precisely what students are going to need remedial help.

Ahhh this brings back the good old days of the election when my kids heard things at church and school like: "I hate Obama, my dad said if he saw him he'd shoot him" among other brilliant things you naturally pass on to the future generation.

By the way, stupid people, what do you think about taking away socialist education? You can pay for the education you choose and nothing be left to the taxpayers. Yeah, didn't think so.

Stupid People.

I was asked by a reader to define Stupid People. I speak of them often.
No, I don't think all republicans or all conservatives are stupid people. I think people who perpetrate or believe in anything that is fear-mongering or in any way provoke torch wielding stupid people, are stupid people. People who blindly follow or believe in the birthers, the 9/12ers, death panels, black supremacy (to name a few) or truly believe that this or any other President in history became such for any other reason than to help the people of our great nation. If it sounds outrageous, it probably is, LOOK IT UP. After all "stupid" is just ignorance gone awry. We have a fresh new president. Yes, he's a democrat. Yes, he underestimated or was too idealistic (they hate you President Obama and you can't change that. Stop trying to be their friend and make the changes in spite of them). Yes, he's proposing big changes (after all, we've done SOOOO very well in the last 8 years). Yes, he's black and yes, he's white. Yes he's human and should be able to wear vacation wear when he's on vacation).
Stupid people can be any age, color, gender, political party (I'd make a list of the stupid dems (demwits), but I have other things to think about today), religion (or lack there of),etc .
Is President Obama going to make mistakes? Yes, he already has. He's human. He is serving this country in a different way but no less important or dangerous that one of the members of our armed forces. He loves this country no less than you or I and twice as much as the wingnut, stupid people do. (BTW wingnut can go left or right too).
I think tea parties are stupid, pointless, and quite honestly an insult to the original Boston Tea Party. Do you think you would be allowed to act like this just anywhere? No. But our country is and always will be The Land of the Free, and the home of the Brave. Just don't look too close, because you'll see the stupid people.

Glenn Beck has discovered that Rockefeller was a communist and a fascist. So for around 70 or 80 years now we haven't been paying attention to what dangers this art poses for us?? How much more evidence do we need to take President Obama out of office? Yes, yes I know. He wasn't even born yet but keep in mind that his family started all of this conspiracy at his birth. I mean over 40 years ago they put fake birth announcements in Oahu newpapers to throw the world off the fact he was born in Kenya or whatever.

I see a straight jacket and padded walls in Glenn Becks future.. Watch and groan.

Sooooo, The Color of Change can actually make changes. I'm so glad I joined but the results have been freaky. Glenn Beck is losing his few remaining marbles. This clip was shortly after some of the REALLY big advertisers pulled out:

I'm highly skeptical about any conspiracy theory that the theorist puts together choosing their own words, placement of words, or random points on a map. It seems so Nostradamus to me. Easily fashioned to mean what you want it to mean. The problem with THIS clip is that the word Beck comes up with, isn't a word. (Not to mention he still hasn't figured out what Acorn does.) OLIGARH. That isn't a word. He pulls a Y out of his butt and pronounces an entirely different word: OLIGARCHY and explaining the C and the Y would have been simple. Sing along with me now.. ♫M-I-C C ya real soon! K-E-Y Y?? Because we like you! M-O-U-S-E ♫ And what does this fine word mean?? According to dictionary.com it means

a form of government in which all power is vested in a few persons or in a dominant class or clique; government by the few.

Well THAT sounds familiar. The Bush Administration. Remember how Bush could talk and we never saw Cheney's lips moving? Big Oil, Haliburton, BIG LIES?? They are STILL coming out and Bush has gone into hiding and Cheney won't shut up. He certainly isn't talking about President Obama and the Dems in Congress. They have yet to realize that the Republicans are NEVER going to like the darkie in the White House and that the Democrat majority is fleeting. If they hate you, then you should stop trying to pacify them. They are ignorant bigots. Pass the health care reform and compromise NOTHING. Tax freaking junk food, it will pay for their clogged arteries later down the line. Pay teachers who are deserving what they deserve and give us all the rights that all government employees enjoy and we are already paying for.
Back to Beck and clip number 2:

Moving but he forgot the Mentholatum. He and his family is in danger? He's just a capitalistic clown?? Well the problem here is that you get paid well to spout your "jokes" that backwoods hillbillies believe is gospel truth. You think YOU'RE in danger?? Imagine our President who you LIE about for a living and his wife and two little girls. He's not a capitalistic clown, he is risking his life to try to change our country for the better. Can you imagine the terror that he must feel for HIS family? He is putting himself in the cross hairs because (maybe a bit too idealistically) he thought he could bring change. I feel no pity for you, Glenn Beck. I feel like you are barely even getting what you deserve. I dislike you above all else because you capitalize on something that is sacred to most of us. Our faith. We don't peddle it. We give it out for free because WE want to make a difference too.

In closing I want to relate an amazing thing that happened to my daughter today. She was in class and they were talking about different forms of government. He produced actual evidence to show them the numbers of the death rate of children in their first year of life in America, 7 in 1000. In European countries with socialized medicine the number is 3 in 1000. He immediately said I am not telling you which party I belong to, but I'm fairly certain he will be called on the carpet for it. Students in some schools are being asked to turn in their liberal teachers. My daughter said immediately the kids started protesting with the same lies and fear mongering that they listen to as they all gather around and enjoy Glenn Beck and prayer. He stopped them and said these are facts. Look them up. I will be emailing him after I publish this blog and telling him that should he encounter problems I will do whatever I can to defend my child's right to an unbiased education. I regret not attending a school board meeting when the superintendent insist the chapter on evolution be torn out of our biology books.
