I had to go to the doctor today and ran some errands so I had the radio on. I have Sirius in my car so I can listen to leftist talk radio. I have yet to find a talk radio show I like because all the hosts that I've ever listened to are annoying and arrogant and in all reality they don't seem too intelligent. So I was listening to this guy and a woman called in for some help. She was pro-choice and debating the issue with someone she knew and needed to know why she was pro choice. The host advised her to resort to science to confuse the conservative (assuming, of course, that this is a really stupid person) He advised that she talk about the 'blastula' being taken from the womb within the first three months and allowed a chance to survive which, of course it won't. (Embryo or fetus humanizes what some would like to dispose of with no emotional involvement.) I was 15 years old when I met my first atheist. He was my boss at the lab I worked at that summer in Upward Bound. I listened to the debates of these employees of the lab speak of the growth of a child and many of them were christian and probably Mormon. But these were very intelligent men debating science without religion at all. My boss talked of the classic parasitic relationship of the growing embryo to it's host. Parasite sounds so draining. So nasty. In reality there are parasitic or symbiotic relationships that are beneficial, in fact most are. Oops digression.
I have been pregnant 3 times. My first ended after 3 months in miscarriage. The other two resulted in my beautiful daughters. All 3 were planned and very much hoped for. I chose to bring children into the world because I can. I followed all of the conservative rules. I'm married, we could afford to have children, I'm Christian. No scandals. I chose to become a mother because I am pro-choice.
This radio host also said that a reasonable argument is that if someone is in a car accident and needs medical assistance to live that it is interfering in the natural order of things. If God wants someone to live, they will live without interference. Here's the problem: that is ridiculous. It's human nature to do everything to save someone's life. Sometimes people are so determined to keep someone alive that they will let their loved ones live on life support with no real hope of the loved one coming back to them. That won't happen to me because I have a living will. I will not live on life support. Because that is my choice and I am pro-choice.
The opposite of pro-choice is anti-choice so if you aren't pro-choice you aren't pro-democracy, you are pro-autocracy and you think SOCIALISM sucks!
I am also quite obviously pro-life because, again, 3 pregnancies. I think the only people who are pro-death are serial killers and if we are going to go for the assumption that all conservatives or Republican are pro-life then let's assume that they are also pro-capital punishment for said serial killers which takes us back to pro-death.
So forget the semantics. It's really all about abortion. I'm Mormon and one thing we learn from the time we can sit in our own little classes at church we learn about free agency. That it is the gift we were given by God. Had we gone with option #2 we would be forced to do the right thing. Life is a learning experience. You make bad choices sometimes and those are the ones that shape us. Make us better people. If I was raped and discovered I was pregnant, I would NOT terminate the pregnancy. I'm pretty certain I wouldn't even give the child up for adoption, you know why? Because it's MY choice. If it was one of my daughters, I'd have them given the morning after pill. Because until they are old enough to deal with all of the issues that would come from an act forced upon them, I would be making those choices for them. I realize that the morning after pill isn't technically abortion nor is birth control, but these are the gray areas that we have to make choices about. We live in a country that allows us the freedom to MAKE those choices.
I wouldn't have an abortion. If my child gets knocked up out of unprotected consensual sex, they will be and have been told that morally I am opposed to abortion. It's not birth control and some choices have lasting results. I will help them, but they will be responsible for any child that came from an unwise sexual encounter. I will love and help, because I'm their mother and they are MY responsibility. I wouldn't approve of them choosing abortion. I believe that everyone should have the freedom to make their own choices. They should vote responsibly. They should own guns responsibly (if they want to). Making abortion illegal isn't going to stop it from happening. To assume it will is as asinine as Bristol Palin being the spokesgirl for abstinence. Instead we should stop being so completely naive as to believe that they are going to always abstain until marriage, although that is the best choice of all. We need to teach protection, responsibility, and morality.
Leave the moral judgment to God. And beware of those gray areas.
Update to Trump Era Newcomers
Until I understand this EU Cookie law better I will leave Google's complimentary notice that this blog uses Blogger and Google cookies. These include Google Analytics and AdSense cookies.
Also, I feel that I should warn that this blog was started in the style of and in response to the toxic commentary of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. I don't mince words and the people who cannot see common sense in my words or are deliberately uninformed may not like the way I express myself. I moderate comments because I have had stalkers that posted filth in response to my religion. I'm not afraid to post conflicting opinion comments but I filter threats and inappropriate language comments.
This comes in response to the Trump Era. May it be shorter than 4 years. =)
