Chapter 11 ~ The Death of Elizabeth Short (This was taken from www.theblackdahliainhollywood.com )

About 10:00 pm, on January 9, Beth Short walked out of the lobby doors of the Biltmore Hotel on Olive Street and turned south. According to authorities, she was not seen again until six days later, when her bisected body was found naked in a vacant lot in Los Angeles.

At 11:07 a.m. on January 15, Betty Bersinger, who lived at 3705 S. Norton Avenue, was walking south on Norton, pushing her daughter in a carriage, when she saw the body in two pieces laying in the lot. She hurried along, not wanting to frighten her child, and knocked on the door of a house nearby and asked to use the telephone. She called the police and reported what she had seen and then went on with her business.

At 11:18 a.m., Officer S. J. Lambert arrived at the scene. Twelve minutes later, Sgt. F. A. Brown and H. L. Hansen were on hand and examined the body.

More officials and newspaper reporters showed up. After the coroner had the body removed the investigation began. Headlines, stories and photographs about the Black Dahlia filled the papers for weeks.

In those waning, golden days of Hollywood in January of 1947, a fellow could drop by the newsstand at Hollywood and Vine and pick up a copy of the latest edition of the Examiner and pop into Mike Lyman’s across the street for lunch and read about the “Werewolf Murder” victim, Elizabeth Short.

In 1947. the murder of Elizabeth Short competed for headline space with the divorce of actress Laraine Day and Brooklyn Dodgers manager Leo Durocher. In December, 1946, weeks before Beth’s body was found in a vacant lot in Los Angeles, Benny Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel, changing the face of Las Vegas for all time. Months later, ‘Bugsy’ was shot to death in Beverly Hills on June 20. Gangsters, movie stars and murder dominated the newspapers in those post war months.

* * *

On October 28, 1949, Lieutenant Frank B. Jemison, of the Bureau of Investigation filed a description of the body in his report to H. L. Stanley, Chief of the Bureau of Investigation.

The body had been cleanly severed at the mid line and the lower half was laying about one foot to the south of the upper half both parts laying absolutely flat with the protruding entrails of the lower one half laying under the buttocks. There was a marked post mortem lividity on the top side of both parts indicating that the victim had lain on her front side or face for some period of time immediatley following her death.

The body had been washed; there were bristles of a stiff brush still adhering to the body; there were several lacerations on the forehead which appeared to have been inflicted by a blunt instrument; lacerated left breast and lacerated right breast, the top of which appeared to have been removed. The area covered by the pubic hair was slashed in criss-cross fashion and the scarcity of hair gave rise to the opinion that the hair had been cut off rather close to the skin. (Not shaved.) There was a tic-tac-toe slashing on the right hip; the mouth was badly slashed approximately three inches from the corners and the upper lip was deeply lacerated on the right hand side. There were possible strangulation marks on the neck and definite rope or tie marks on both lower legs and arms.

From the lack of blood stains around or under the body it is a definite conclusion that she was killed elsewhere. Photographs were taken of the body and measurements as well as photographs of a tire track at the curb line at a point opposite of where the body was found. Upon removing all of the body by Cornoner’s deputies it was found that the grass undeneath the body was still wet with dew, indicating the body had been placed there after the dew fell in the early morning hours, at approximately 2:00 a.m., January 15, 1947.

Rigor mortis had not begun to set in, indicating that the murder would probably have been committed after 1:00 a.m., January 15, 1947, as the Coroner believes rigor mortis would set in within ten hours time. He stated the cause of death as shock and loss of blood from hemorrhage. He reported that echimosis [ecchymosis] appeared on the lacerations, on the head, face and right breast while slight echimosis appeared on the left breast and on the right breast and on the cut severing the body at mid line. There was no echimosis on all other lacerations indicating they were inflicted post mortem.

Note: If Jemison’s description is correct, his report implies that the “cut severing the body at mid line” began while the victim was still alive. Ecchymosis (bruising) occurs before the heart stops beating and blood flow ceases; there is the possibility of slight bruising post mortem.

The flesh cut from her left thigh weighing approximately a pound was found in her vagina and the pubic hair was found in the rectum. (See photographs.)

There were no cigarette burns and no tattoo marks on the body.

Mr. Ray Pinker of the Crime Laboratory was only able to acquire a few drops of blood from this body and typed it as “A B”, which is a rare type of blood appearing in less than six per cent of the human bodies.

The officers requested that the Coroner and the County Chemist analyze the vital organs chemically to determine for one thing whether or not her body contained narcotics. At a later date when the officers requested the results they were informed that these vital organs had been misplaced and had probably been thrown out at the time they were cleaning up the laboratory and further that they had made no analysis.

And so on.

* * *

Authorities claimed they had no reliable leads to prove the whereabouts of Elizabeth Short from the time she left the Biltmore Hotel at about 10:00 pm on January 9 until her naked, bisected body was found on Norton Avenue on the morning of January 15.

For a more detailed description of Beth's life and bungled investigation, I recommend the above link to the site. We are having a lot of success getting authors and other Dahlia experts to do guest chats. The link for the forum is on the main page. I won't put the death pictures on my blog, but they are easily found online. Just don't believe everything you read.

Cliff May rationalizes torture to the wrong man. Didn't Jim Cramer teach you idiots anything???

So if you say you are anti-torture and you say we do it safer and more humane that the Japanese soldiers did who were executed for water boarding our soldiers, it somehow makes it okay? If we get to pick and choose when we honor our promises to the Geneva Convention, are we okay if someone does the same thing to us in what they feel is the exact same situation? We are talking Al Qaeda doesn't qualify because they didn't sign it, it somehow exonerates us because we did?? We can torture under the excuse of temporary insanity, so is that the excuse for the past 8 years (9 if you were insane enough to vote for the Bush Administration). If during the past 8 years we were all temporarily insane does that mean we need to release every person found guilty of a crime and has been imprisoned? If you talk fast enough and regret that the secret and lies are found out are we supposed to believe a freaking word you say? Do you even comprehend that we feel betrayed and ashamed of what we did and that we can't take it back but we can go forward and become better for having learned from our mistakes?
And Cliff, we realize that when you said this interview was better than the ones you did on CNN and FOX, you are brown-nosing, lying, and insincere just as you were through the whole conversation, but the difference is truly not because we believed you, it's that we never expect truth from CNN or Fox. What do we do when our country has come to a point that we are ashamed of our actions and the best news comes from Comedy Central?
I tend to agree with Jon, why did Truman destroy an entire city (Hiroshima) when he could have used the first bomb as a warning. I realize that they ignored the first warning but who would think anyone would be freaky enough to unleash nuclear power on mostly civilian targets. In fact who was freaky enough to come up with a name like "Little Boy" for a weapon of mass destruction. "Fat Man" is more understandable, but Rush wasn't born for about 6 years later.

Bottom line and please correct me if I am wrong. We now know that we went into Iraq to avenge the attack on our country. There was intelligence that enabled our highest ranking government officials to convince our country and our allies that there were weapons of mass destruction. We now know that all of that was false. They lied to us and our allies. They used torture methods (water boarding being the most controversial at this time) that were opposite to the Geneva Convention rules. It's hard to pin down exactly what the definition of torture is, but the pictures that came out of Abu Ghraib prison, that was torture plain and simple. That is animalistic behavior and we are not animals. The Bush Administration assured us it was an isolated incident. Now we know it happened in other prisons and have been told more pictures will come. What else is there. How about we wait to get it all. All of the lies and corruption. And President Obama I love and respect you in all things, but this is not a time to look forward and not back. That has always been the answer. These men that we trusted lied. We don't even have all the info yet. They deserve to be tried and convicted. It's time for America stop trying to camouflage our mistakes and cruelty. If there is a loophole that allows us to torture people we perceive as terrorists. What about the parents of the children who flat out say they would kill Obama if they had a chance. Isn't that a form of terrorism?? Can we torture them? We were wrong and we need to be honest. We were scammed and we need all of the info. I'm so ashamed of us. We were wrong. We need to own it.
My Beth Short friends will understand this comparison and not agree. A young girl was murdered and dismembered and scattered into storm drains, etc. They had a teen suspect named William Heirens. He was a teen and the Chicago PD needed to solve the case. He was tortured into signing a confession written by the newspaper. I don't think he did it. If I was tortured for info, I'd crack easily even if I was innocent. Last I read William Heirens is still in prison. An old man. He maintains his innocence to this day but realizes he will die there. How can we trust info that came from someone so tortured that they'd confess to anything? I don't. Our government needed an excuse to justify their lack of decency. Maybe the got it, maybe not. In the meantime I want to hear all of the truth. I hope we get it all, as horrific as it may be. God bless our troops and their families. We lost so many brave men and it seems to be for nothing.
Like I said, I am not the smartest and most informed Democrat in Utah.. Okay maybe I am since there are so few of us. I serious would love your opinions on this post. I am trying to understand all of this. I have dedicated readers, I would love your opinions.

The interview is uncensored and I remember one f-bomb. NSFW.

"War is by definition, temporary insanity" ~Jon Stewart

Pay attention Rush, you've pissed off the gun clingers!

"You like the Humane Society," Mrs. Van Susteren said.

"Who?" Mr. Limbaugh asked.

"The Humane Society."

Laughing, the radio host, who spends three hours a day talking politics, said, "Well, now, you're getting into politics," and quickly moved off the topic.

The Humane Society's president and chief executive, Wayne Pacelle, said the issue shouldn't be political.

Sigh... You even make Greta sound like a genius and THAT is something.

Click--> Rush angers Republicans with guns.

I've mentioned in my shout box that my husband hunts and we use the meat. All of it. My husband was pretty much the only guy at work who didn't run out and buy all the bullets he could. Nor has he buried his guns in the yard. That is because no matter who is President (and I am typing slowly here)the Constitution guarantees our rights to bear arms. The Bible states that God created animals for the good of man (something like that. It's in Genesis if you doubt me). In the Carnivorian creed it says "Animals must die so plants can live." (Okay I TOTALLY made that one up.)
But I have been getting up 3 times a night to feed a baby kitten. I mentioned yesterday that only one of the 3 cats that my daughter found in the dumpster survived. People who dump newborn kittens or puppies are cruel. People who enjoy watching or participating in cock fighting, dog fighting, or bullfighting are cruel. People club seals or raise animals to kill for their fur and the people who wear fur are cruel. People who can experiment, cripple, torture, or kill animals like Jeffrey Dahmer did are cruel. I'm pretty sure that even if there are people in the Humane Society (which I'm sure their are) that want to stop the hunting of animals that are used as God expected them to be used, they have far bigger battles to wage than hunting. Ummm Rush??? Pssst. Over here, whaling is illegal internationally, but some countries ignore that completely. Be careful there Moby!!

OMG!!! Maybe I AM stupid, but it really feels like it's not me.

HuffPo Headlines: Senate Expected To Confirm Obama's Health Secretary Today...
New York Times: It Is "Deeply Disquieting" That Obama Administration Has Few Top Health Officials In Place

Senate MAY finally confirm Kathleen Sebelius as HHS. They shouldn't have to. The Republican party seems to have an objection to every decision that our President makes. It would be astoundingly amusing if it wasn't continuing to cost the world money and lives.

Does the NYT even PAY attention? These positions would be filled if the Republicans weren't being a huge pain in the butt for absolutely no good reason.

Feline update.

For those who care.
I made a very valuable friend this weekend. She runs the shelter here and she doesn't euthanize. She had a nursing mother that took the newborns my daughter found in the dumpster. She put them on a very nurturing mother that adopted them easily, but they had been neglected too long and only one of the three survived. Better odds than the dumpster, but still sad and even worse if you contemplate the alternative. I have offered to help to take care of babies that need to be mothered night and day, but one at a time. My daughter would like to help and will be volunteering and raising money for the cause. She's proven to be really helpful during nighttime feedings. She will be very dedicated to the volunteer work. The baby I am caring for now is thriving but I fall in love and this one is so sweet. I will be sad to see him go but he has a home lined up and I can't adopt every cat in the world, but I will certainly try to help the ones I can...

An ounce of prevention

It's interesting to me that what they call the 100 year flood in my area has occurred like 5 or 6 times, that I know of, in my life time and I'm not 5 or 6 hundred years old. I've often pondered the shock people must feel as basements are filling with water and they are counting backward to the LAST 100 year flood. Why don't they rename it and prepare for it. It isn't rocket science how it happens. One very warm day the snow melts up the canyon or it rains heavily and the water takes the exact same path it always has. I am not certain whose grand idea it was/is to keep building in the path of the flood, but they do. However a couple years back they started widening out the creek and shoring up the sides and digging reservoirs a long the way. I hasn't been 100 years yet so we've yet to see if an ounce of prevention was worth it. (MHO it will be)
So in February 2004 an avian influenza was detected in birds in Vietnam. It was a virus that crossed over to humans and had a much lower toll than projected. It also hasn't been classified as a pandemic because they haven't found it to be sustained and efficient enough of a virus to be passed from human to human. Every known case was passed from a bird to a human. My husband came in as I was writing this and we were talking about the difference between an epidemic, pandemic, and endemics. Plagues, viruses, influenza, fevers, etc. He told me that the hospital corporation he works for had been preparing for the SARS pneumonia outbreak which was stopped by nation and international health authorities before it could become pandemic. Preparation for this sort of thing is what the GOP stripped from the stimulus as unnecessary spending. God forbid they look at it and say "yeah our country's health is important." An ounce of prevention...
So now we have an outbreak of an influenza virus that has been named Swine Flu. It sounds like a very frightening and real threat because of the death toll in such a short span. And not to make light of a serious thing, but just as the Avian Flu conjured scenes from Hitchcock's movie "The Birds", Swine Flu sounds like something you'd pick up from the spittle spray of Rush Limbaugh's mouth as he rants incoherently.
I wondered how this one was going to be pinned on President Obama, but the GOP is going to need to hire the Brothers Bush Fairytale author's to explain that while bitching and fussing and mocking the wasteful government spending stimulus money on such trivial things as flu epidemics and Jindal who joked "They want to spend stimulus money on volcano monitoring? Why everyone knows that the Hill Witch keeps tabs on our volcanoes by floating chicken bones in her own intestinal ichor!" It was stripped from the stimulus by the GOP as well. Oops! My bad. The Hill Witch must have taken her eyes off of Russia long enough to miss the eruption of Alaska's Mount Redoubt (ironic name). Now I'm not going to suggest that it takes a bunch of superstitious Republicans to believe that there is a guaranteed 100 years between floods, volcanic eruptions, and diseases of mass destruction. Okay.. Yes I am. I mean, for real, Sarah Palin didn't know how fruit flies are used in DNA research. And I live in Utah. The only thing more prevalent than prairie dogs here are Republicans.

Oh, and my mother's oldest brother died of Rocky Mountain Spotted fever when he was 12. He contracted it from a prairie dog that he had trapped in their cattle field. If a cow steps into a prairie dog hole, it can break it's leg and have to be put down. Times have changed and much can be prevented. It just takes people willing to talk to people who study these things. A president can't be expected to be everywhere all the time. He can't stop natural disasters, viral outbreaks, or unnecessary lives lost to a war dreamed up to benefit corrupt politicians. But he can listen and he can learn. Sadly President Obama is having to listen to people who can help us AND people who talk out of their butts.

Waterboarding: Torture or not?

In the Republican debates, Andrew Jones, a college student from Seattle submitted the question: "Recently, Senator McCain has come out strongly against using waterboarding as an instrument of interrogation. My question for the rest of you is, considering that Mr. McCain is the only one with any firsthand knowledge on the subject, how can those of you sharing the stage with him disagree with his position?" In response to this question Mitt Romney stated "I oppose torture. I would not be in favor of torture in any way, shape or form". Prompted by the moderator as to whether waterboarding was torture, Romney said "as a presidential candidate, I don't think it's wise for us to describe specifically which measures we would and would not use" which prompted the following exchange between McCain and Romney: McCain: "Well, governor, I'm astonished that you haven't found out what waterboarding is". Romney: "I know what waterboarding is, Senator". McCain: "Then I am astonished that you would think such a – such a torture would be inflicted on anyone in our – who we are held captive and anyone could believe that that's not torture. It's in violation of the Geneva Convention".

Waterboarding dates back to the 1500's and has been used and defined as torture During The Spanish Inquisition, the Japanese and Gestapo, to name a VERY few. The US Generals in the Vietnam war defined waterboarding as torture therefore illegal. Much to the embarrassment of the U.S. a picture surfaced of an American soldier and a South Vietnamese soldier waterboarding a North Vietnamese soldier.

"Following World War II war crime trials were convened. The Japanese were tried and convicted and hung for war crimes committed against American POWs. Among those charges for which they were convicted was waterboarding." John McCain

“Waterboarding -- that's what America does to its prisoners now. Dunking them in water until they confess. Of course, you have to remember -- we uncovered a lot of witches that way. So, credit where credit is due.” A.Whitney Brown

Information retrieved from the waterboarding may not be reliable because a person under such duress may admit to anything, as harsh interrogation techniques lead to false confessions. "The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law", says John Sifton of Human Rights Watch.[13] It is "bad interrogation. I mean you can get anyone to confess to anything if the torture's bad enough", said former CIA officer Bob Baer.

So after spending a lot of time today reading definitions and rationalizations I have discovered two things:
1. I can't blog this issue without bias. It's torture. I can't offer any other definition.
2. Many people are upset at the release of our torture/"enhanced interrogation" techniques not because the find them morally wrong but because we are tipping our hand to future torturees. But newsflash: We didn't invent any of this stuff. We learned it from the kind of people who have no moral boundaries. It's been done for centuries. They KNOW how it ends. It's amazing that we do. Firsthand.

Oh please...

I am so completely astounded by the total freaking crazy idiotic people who are peeing their pants over the torture memos and pictures being released.

1.) FOIA (Freedom Of Information Act) Which was ironically signed into law by LBJ on July 4th 1966. It has been amended over the years (less info by Reagan, more info by Clinton. See the trend?)
2.) President Obama ran on (among other things) transparency and raise your hand if any of this torture, lies, war crimes, and most certainly more tales of heinous activities to boost the Bush Administration's popularity comes as a surprise to you. If you've raised your hand skip on down to the dictionary.com link and type in denial.
3.) This is America. We don't PRETEND to be above this horrifying behavior we really ARE above this behavior. The same dumb a$$e$ that are having total fits over President Obama's show of consideration to friends and enemies alike are having fits that this evidence is being released. Not that it happened, but that it's being released.

Is it a partisan act of revenge on the Republican party? Maybe. Maybe not. I don't think Democrats or liberals are the only ones that believe that for 8 years we've been wrong and betrayed. We've been shameful. I think that the more Republicans, conservatives and high ranking official with blood on their hands, try to suppress this, the worse they are making the right wingnuts, corrupted officials, and the Bush Administration look. When is everyone going to shut the freak up and realize that even if they voted against President Obama even a jackal would have been more humane not to mention intelligent than the last Presidency and the other choices in the election. (You know that Sarah Palin was gifted with some automatic assault rifle or something. She's picking off wolves at a much quicker pace with the helicop... I'm mean road to somewhere the taxpayers paid for.)
And Cheney.. I'm sure in between these appearances to spout your absolute insanity you are sleeping in some cryogenic coffin. Do the world a favor and lose the key.

It's hard to be a mother cat...

I know this because I am one right now. The boy down the street that found the kitten named it Snickers. I am guessing his girlfriend has something to do with this and when I call him to tell him about visitation, I'm going to tell him that if he doesn't come up with a better name that I'm going to start rumors that he's (Ummm p.c. moment) sensitive. So this little freaking cat wants to eat all of the time. I've figured he's 2-3 weeks old and he's eating formula from a dropper. He's getting better at walking and crawls all around me, night and day. His meower and purrer works really well and he never shuts up, unless he's asleep which is a lot more often than I am, now. At 5 a.m. my daughter took over and I don't know took over for her because she was helping some during the night. I'm pretty impressed that in one day he is using the litter box correctly but has only gone pee. No accidents and he was digging one hole but going pee where he was standing. Now he's getting it into the hole and burying it. So I look it up and find out that the mother cat licks the anal and genital area to stimulate it. I told my daughter that could be her job.... Ack. He's asleep right now and I'm typing really quietly. He sleeps tangled in my hair and burrowed into my neck. He starts licking my neck and biting it when he's hungry so I think he's definitely identified me as his mother. I wonder what happened to his mom and siblings. Not to be mean but if I had a litter, I'd run away from home. But I won't because I think he already has abandonment issues.

**If you are offended by the usage of words like "pee" you should stop reading now because this cat is dead to the world asleep and I need to pee.

Update and you will think I am making this up. I thought I was being punk'd but my youngest daughter came in crying with a Walmart bag. She was at a church activity and they took some stuff to the dumpster and found 3 newborn, STILL WET from birth baby kittens. I just found the city animal control officer who is very awesome and she told me she had a mother who had lost her litter and was very much in pain and she's suffering from the loss. We got the babies out there and she rolled over and let them nurse. THANK HEAVENS!!! I told her I'd be coming out to meet her and help foster a bit, but this put me at nine cats. My oldest would like to volunteer there and we could work well together. I need to learn how to foster a bit better and this is going to be a fun charitable thing for me to do. But it's a relief to have help after I get them eating and ready for adoption that I have some help and I will try to help adopt them out and the shelter is non-euthanasia. I can take care of babies past the colostrum age, teach them to litter train, then work on adopting them out. There's also a van that sterilizes them. New cause, YAY!!! But it's exhausting.

This and that..

Can I just say that I am so freaking happy that the weenie waving Mormon guy got voted off of Survivor last night?? Second favorite blindside in Survivor history. The gross Mormon reality stars are more prevalent than the good ones. Hasta Tyson!!!!

Also a couple of young teenage boys came to my house yesterday and said that they heard I rescue cats... They brought me a baby kitten that they found out by the bus garage. I am guessing he's about two weeks old, but he seems like a fighter. The boys say they'll take him back when I get him old enough to eat on his own. I need to start taking pictures of them. Cinder looked like she was on death's doorstep and she is doing much better now. She's filled out some but her legs and paws will always be misshapened I assume from malnutrition. So the current standing is... I have 6 cats. I won't torture you with the list of the menagerie except to say that I really think the sugar gliders are expecting.

Definately a GREAT money raising idea!!

As always, the conservative talking heads are trying to convince us that waterboarding isn't torture and are eventually going to have to give in. (It's called denial.)Especially since new photos are on the way. Israel has outlawed waterboarding calling it torture and we are not even THAT civilized? Sean Hannity has volunteered to be waterboarded and Keith Olbermann is offering $1000 per second that he lasts to charity (Like Families of Men and Women Lost While Looking For Weapons of Mass Destruction). This should prove to be interesting. If they can't find anyone to do it to him I think Shep Smith is pissed off at whoever is responsible that he may be open to the idea. But he may ask for Condy Rice and Dick Cheney give it a whirl as well. If the Democrats are going to be chipping in all the charity money, can we get Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh too???
Glenn Beck: Waterboarding?? Ohh pick me, pick me!!!

Governor Sebelius shot down by the Repug Senate members...

Senate Republicans refused today to allow a confirmation vote on his health secretary nominee Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kan.)

I have great admiration for Gov. Sebelius and had kind of hoped President Obama would choose her as a running mate. She is smart and shows the bipartisan qualities he seeks to bring to the country.

During her long stint in Kansas politics, Sebelius has been known as a moderate with strong relations across the aisle. She chose a running mate two years ago who had been a Republican Party leader.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley said today that, if necessary, the Democratic leader intends to pursue the procedural maneuvers needed to overcome a Republican filibuster. That would likely push a confirmation vote into next week.

"We're confident there will be the 60 votes needed to confirm her," Manley said.

This afternoon, McConnell's office clarified in a statement that the nomination is "not stymied, she's just not getting confirmed today" and said that concerns about a filibuster are premature.

(The previous quotes came from WaPo)

I hope they can get her in. I'd love to see her run for President, she's a smart lady. Funny how the GOP keeps trying to dig up dirt on Dems. The Republican senate et al. have been palling around with terrorists for the past 8 years and are STILL trying to redefine torture. I was actually impressed with Shepard Smith of Faux news. He seems to be genuinely horrified that our country lost it's moral compass. Here's a clip (warning it's uncensored and he drops the f-bomb):

America doesn't torture

Just saw a Fox news preview..

I guess Deseret Book (LDS bookstore) is pulling the Twilight series off of it's shelves. Umm, isn't that like shutting the barn door after the horses are loose? I like to know what is going on with the popular books and know what my kids are reading. I read the entire series and I am the among the most liberal Mormons you'll ever find, but the whole Mormon, BYU grad author thing was a complete fake out. I know people who assume if it's Mormon or BYU branded, it's moral. I was surprised during book one, shocked at book two and horrified by book three. My daughter has shown no interest and I've not encouraged or discouraged. My advice.. Hello Mormon mothers, pay attention! That often is my advice, but sadly people don't recognize that I often know what I'm talking about.
I snagged this post off of KSL's messageboard:

Any Self -respecting mother would be offended that they were on the shelf
Report Comment by Julie M. @ 7:32pm - Wed Apr 22nd, 2009
I felt betrayed that I allowed my Daughter to start reading them because of the hype and "BYU Author." When I found out about the last books honeymoon content I was mortified that I had been duped by the LDS cultral backing. I went to the movie with my daughter to see what all her freinds would be talking about. My Daughter and I felt very uncomfortable seeing the movie. I threw the books in the trash. Not even worth getting money by selling them back. Sneaky way to sell sex to teens. All the unforbidden love is a bunch of crap if he keeps showing up in her room at night with her wearing nothing but underwear. Just because they are married later does not mean it is a free ticket to talk about intimacies and violent ones at that. You know it is coming with the sequels. I know I will get hate responses but I know there are tons of moms out there like me that will back me up. They pulled the books because they probably actually read them and were embarrased to have been representing the Miss SM.[Stepheneie Meyer]

The series and the movie are a dissapointment.

She (the poster) was torn apart, but I totally agree. And for all of the people who are saying that we are okay with witchcraft, but not vampires, and it's all fantasy. It's not the same thing. There is "snogging" in Harry Potter. Those books are not only far better written but J.K. Rowling never took the teen attraction in that direction. She could have but it wasn't critical to the story and she recognized her range. Very admirable. The vampires and werewolf subject isn't what a parent would object to. It started out with him staying in her bedroom to watch her sleep, every night. They did this behind her father's back. Not many father's would be good with that. That was just the beginning... Parents should know, but I personally think that they shouldn't be so ignorant to assume that Mormon author or BYU Grad=A rated-G read.

Why isn't Cheney scared?

Everyone has their panties in a twist because President Obama has had the audacity to bow to Saudi King Abdullah and gave the right wingnuts a new definition for tea bagging. Those crazy conservatives.. They have some serious Freudian issues.

Then he smiled at Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

While being an American, propriety dictates that we need not bow to anyone, as we are not their subjects. However, Americans have become increasingly disrespectful. Not only to our own country but on the whole we are, just flat our course, rude, and embarrassing. Showing respect and niceties to leaders of other countries doesn't diminish us. We have a lot of right wing windbags that do that for us all the time. Repairing the damage that was inflicted during the Bush administration isn't traitorous, it's savvy. Offering an olive branch or looking for common ground is one less war we need not engage in. In the mean time can we have a ground hog day, the type holiday where he stays out of site the pops his head out to tell us something basically of no use.

Describing the Bush administration's policy as to "ignore" Chavez, Cheney said that Obama's handshake was "not helpful... You have people all across South America who are watching how we respond." He added, "The president needs to provide leadership... needs to distinguish between good [guys] and bad guys."

Finally, Cheney defended the use of waterboarding and other interrogation techniques, saying, "It worked. It's been enormously valuable in terms of saving lives and preventing another mass casualty attack on the US."

Why is Cheney giving political advice? He is responsible for much of the mess our country is in, so we would listen to his wisdom....WHY??? He lied. If he escapes prosecution for the lies and crimes he committed in office, he still owes the devil his eternal soul. In fact the fictional "War on Terror" and stories of weapons of mass destruction are worthy of Dr. Seuss:
Could the bombs be aimed at Bush?
How convenient he's a lush?
If we look in every tree
will they make our oil free?
We can torture, deny them food
We can stack them when they're nude
Waterboard them til they're dead
It's all okay cause Nixon said...

"If the president does it, it isn't illegal"

To smile and introduce himself as the first sane, intelligent, man to be President in a very long time is actually a great idea. When they don't comprehend that they have a chance to be our allies in a peaceful, dignified manner, they may very well be making the same mistakes that the 3 Somalian pirates made. Plan A: Be our friend. Plan B: Meet our Navy Seals.

Sen. John Ensign, R-Nevada, told CNN on Sunday it was "irresponsible" for Obama to have been seen "laughing and joking" with Chavez.

"This is a person who is one of the most anti-American leaders in the entire world," Ensign said on "State of the Union." "He is a brutal dictator, and human rights violations are very, very prevalent in Venezuela. And you have to be careful."

Hmmm.. Human rights violations. I think we all know that many countries are well known for that. But now WE are. Do you waterboard everyone you know? No, because that would be a human rights violation. I liked the idea that President Obama wasn't prosecuting yet. But he seems to have the 'no duh' idea that has never been addressed in the past. Start at the top, the people who forgot that America was supposed to be better than this. Then work your way down. I also like the idea of a special bipartisan committee being appointed with this investigation. It's going to be something more that our President is criticized on. But, maybe this time we can right the wrongs of political corruption put into action by Nixon/Ford.

So sometimes little things are all you have to salvage a bad day.

So my oldest was at school today and saw one of the boys that is in my Sunday School class. I brought the boys home necklaces with a sharks tooth on it. So my daughter called out his name and said "that's a pretty awesome necklace you've got there." He said "That's some pretty awesome parents you've got there." Awwwwwww! This is the kid who has agreed that when I wander off topic with the Duh Factor or in this last week Scientology, that he'd take the fall for me. Because we all know I'm the one who tries to make the whole world make sense.

My blog.. *sigh* Dramz.

I think the point of my blog has been misconstrued. It is something I share my feelings on. I'm happy to have people disagree with me. My feelings have rocked the boat in my family so I moved it. I see that one or two managed to find it or followed it from the link on my myspace (the ones who have added me which is all but one sister) I notice she is among my most devoted readers. I'm not sure why because we agree on very little. I think the warning at beginning pretty much sums up that this is my place to say whatever I want and being the great country of America I get to do that. It's easy to avoid but if IP block is necessary, I can do that too.
At first I vented, but I realize that many people who so opposed President Obama are going to keep resurrecting the same B.S. It's annoying, amusing and frightening. But he's an eternal optimist and I am going to continue my faith in his choices. Obviously it couldn't be worse than the last administration if you put Bin Laden in office. I have started having to fact check now because I can't just vent. I have to know what I'm talking about now. It takes A LOT longer. Because the readership has grown huge beyond my belief. As I stated a while back I've gotten an international following and I am trying for Antarctica. It's the only continent I lack. The last few posts have been fairly positive and shows many sides of me: what I do, and why I am who I am. I am not a pleasant person, I know that, and become less so all the time. I see my niece read yesterday's blog. I dearly hope she found it on her own, but she didn't follow the link from her Myspace, so HOW she found it....I dunno. The alternative is a bit horrifying to me. I invite everyone to comment your opposing views. I understand hometown loyalty, I feel it too. I waited 'til age 18 to learn about myself and I'm still learning. I hear the gossip out of the town I went to school in and no one could make this stuff up. It seriously out dramas Desperate Housewives. And the point of that blog was that other people see the pretentiousness of the town. They are so competitive that people who came to games from out of town had tires slashed and cars keyed, BY THE ADULTS! It's a long running joke. I thought the joke was funny because it's true, understated, but true. I have self image issues and I always will, but I qualify for Mensa. WAY qualify. The number is high. I didn't get that from HS. I did that on my own and I'm proud of it. I'm guessing it's why the blog is pretty popular and I debate very intelligent people all the time. They always agree on one thing: I'm entitled to my opinion and my disclaimer covers it.
Just remember this: I know who comes here. I know what site you come from or if you have me bookmarked. I also know where you go when you leave. I'm pretty honest here. And a lot smarter than many count on.
Again to my niece: I love you and I miss talking to you. You are the youngest of a bunch of nieces that occasionally come to me to vent. I love you and I think I've always made that very clear to you and I can't begin to describe how beautiful you are and how I love your laugh and your smile. I see when you are sad sometimes and it makes me sad. I didn't gain any self-esteem from your hometown. That is my story. It sounds as if yours is different. You are off to a better start than I was and I won't deny that that was very likely my fault entirely. When you write your story of who you are and why, it will be through different eyes and that is a beautiful thing. But most importantly, I need you to understand that your hometown didn't make me a happy person. That was years before you were born. YOU are beautiful and you make me smile every time I see you. I love you more than I can even tell you.

Hellhole High...

I forgot to tell this story earlier. I've made it clear that I don't want to give out anymore info on where I am, other than I'm in Utah. I suppose that all small towns are to a certain degree, ruts. Some people like that, others feel imprisoned (I'm in between, I'm a small town girl). I have no one person I specifically dislike from Hellhole, Utah (it wasn't the town I grew up in and I call it Hellhole to protect the family and friends who live there). I dislike even driving through there because of resentment that continues to influence me so much. I also admit that I need to let it go, but it definitely shaped me into who I am now. I was introverted, shy, and butt ugly. For six weeks every summer I left to live in the nearby University town, where I lucked into the most amazing part of my young life. I could be myself there. When I left home after high school, to be on my own I was amused to run into people who I knew from high school. They were going to college so they can return to their hometown. They think that this place is Shangri-la. My daughter and I watch the show on TV-land called High School Reunion and when it ended I was curious if it told more about the people after the reunion (this season was the class of '88 from a high school in Az, I think. The same year I graduated.) Many people find it hard to believe that someone can be so scarred STILL, after 20 years. I still feel the resentment so I know it happens. How normal that is, I don't know. I'm guessing these were the people who did well in high school and/or were the people who left the scars. I've noticed they don't remember who they hurt because the number is too high and some people just don't matter to them, even still. I think the high school that I went to was especially unpleasant because they truly don't seem to comprehend that many of the other schools in the division we competed in seriously dislike them. I often wonder if they are expecting the paparazzi to show up one day, roll out the red carpet to see who is dressed in the best name brand clothing that bankruptcy can buy as the whole town attends the HS basketball games. And to really make it in Hellhole society is to land a job as a coach or janitor at the high school. I was invited to go to the prom this year, because my niece is a junior there this year (the whole town comes out to watch the prom. I thought everyone did that, that it was the norm,'til I left)I couldn't make it because I was in Hawaii. I know all along I've mentioned that I'm not being biased when I say my daughters are beautiful and I'm not. I swear if I had an ugly child I'd tell you. This particular niece is freaking hot and I'm not saying it because I love her, it's simply the truth. AND I love her. I remember the first time my husband saw her (we were engaged then). He held her and said "She is going to be a princess." She is. It's not one of the things that help at Hellhole High, not something they value, but when she leaves there I think she'll get it. I hope she is ready for the onslaught of people who recognize who she and what she is, because it will come.
All of this is a long story to just set up something funny that happened a few days ago. My friend took his young kids and my young daughter to his son's improv performance. They were given a word and each actor added a letter like it was a spelling bee but the whole group spelled it out. I believe the word was 'platypus' and for laughs they were throwing in q's and all sorts of off the wall things. When they were done the teacher said "Where did you guys get your diploma, Hellhole High???" I swear, I didn't make this up. And what does that say for me? I DID graduate from there, LOL!

How inspiring... And how slow am I to find something positive...

That doesn't say much for me, sadly, but like millions of others, I clicked on this and I was crying like a girl. (Don't deny that you welled up.) Stories like this don't happen for real. We're a cynical species, just watch the audience members when Susan talks about herself and her song choice.
Susan Boyle

This was NOTsomething I counted on....

But I have been astounded by the international hits I get on my blog. I nearly every continent, But for the fun of it I am going to try to lure in a few visitors from off the wall places so I'm going to occasionally be posting a country or continent and see what comes of it, starting with:

Antarctica:

1. Antarctica is the coldest and windiest of all the continents.
2. To the surprise of many, Antarctica is also the driest of all the continents receiving a mere sprinkling of rain and snow once or twice a year.
3. Antarctica gets its name from the Greek language. In a bit of deviousness, the term because it means opposite the Arctic.
4. The continent was discovered in 1820 by a Russian expedition, but was not further explored to any serious extent for another 100 years.
5. No permanent human residents are known to have ever lived on the continent and even today only temporary scientific communities exist.
6. Antarctica, not the Sahara Desert, is technically the biggest desert in the world, but the desert is ice instead of snow.
7. The ice sheet covering the continent is approximately 1.6 miles thick on average and holds 90 percent of the fresh water on the planet in the form of ice.
8. The ice sheet was melting dramatically. In 2002, over 1,000 square miles broke off the continent. In recent years, unusual amounts of snow fall have resulted in a thickening of the ice contrary to global warming concerns.
9. The continent is the only natural habitat of the Emperor Penguin, immortalized in the movie March of the Penguins. The penguin, however, also is found on the shoreline of some southern continents from time to time.
10. The continent has no government and is not owned by any country. Many countries have claimed the continent at one time or another. Currently, a treaty exists that grants the continent its independence from any such claims.

Antarctica has no permanent residents, but a number of governments maintain permanent manned research stations throughout the continent. The number of people conducting and supporting scientific research and other work on the continent and its nearby islands varies from about 1,000 in winter to about 5,000 in the summer. Many of the stations are staffed year-round, the over-wintering personnel typically arriving from their home countries for a one-year assignment. An Orthodox church opened in 2004 at the Russian Bellingshausen Station is also manned year-round by one or two priests, which are similarly rotated every year.

I teach Sunday School.. How dangerous is that???

We have something that my class members call the "Duh factor." I invented it and it talks about the fact our church members were run out of the states and there was a little thing called the Constitution that promised freedom of religion. We lost many of our ancestors (men) to war. Fighting for the country who failed them. In my lesson today we learned about John Taylor who eventually became the third prophet and always showed remarkable courage. Here are two stories I gave in my lesson:

John Taylor Stops a Tar-and-Feathering Threat

Near Columbus, Ohio, a very large crowd of people had gathered to hear Elder John Taylor speak. Before the meeting began, Elder Taylor had been warned by Church members that some men had tar and feathers ready and had “boasted they would dress him [in the tar and feathers] if he undertook to preach” (Roberts, The Life of John Taylor, p. 53). Undaunted, Elder Taylor replied he had made up his mind to speak.

Elder Taylor began by reminding the crowd that he now stood “ ‘among men whose fathers fought for and obtained one of the greatest blessings ever conferred upon the human family—the right to think, to speak, to write … , and the right to worship God according to the dictates of their own consciences—all sacred human rights … guaranteed by the American Constitution. …’ [Then Elder Taylor boldly proclaimed,] ‘I have been informed that you purpose to tar and feather me, for my religious opinions. Is this [what] you have inherited from your fathers? Is this the blessing they purchased with their dearest hearts’ blood—this your liberty? If so, you now have a victim.’ … Here he tore open his vest and said: ‘Gentlemen come on with your tar and feathers, your victim is ready. … Come on, gentlemen! Come on, I say, I am ready!’

“No one moved, no one spoke. [John Taylor] stood there drawn to his full height, calm but defiant—the master of the situation.

“After a pause of some moments he continued his remarks and preached with great boldness and power for some three hours. [After the meeting,] the brethren still insisted that … the intention of the crowd [had been to tar and feather him], but they had been awed into silence by the boldness of Elder Taylor” (Roberts, The Life of John Taylor, pp. 54–55).

John Taylor Strengthened Church Members during Times of Persecution

The following incident took place during some extremely critical years for the Latter-day Saints. In 1854 “a special call from President Young … directed [Elder Taylor] to go to New York City to organize and publish a newspaper whose purpose would be to present the doctrines and practices of the Church in such a way as to neutralize … anti-Mormon feeling that had been mounting for over a year. … Additional brethren [were] to organize and publish Latter-day Saint newspapers in other key cities— … Washington, D.C.; … St. Louis; … San Francisco” (Francis M. Gibbons, John Taylor: Mormon Philosopher, Prophet of God [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1985], p. 138). Elder Taylor took up his residence in New York City and remained there until 1857.

This period climaxed when the United States government in Washington, D.C., sent an army to Utah. The army was to put down what was thought to be a rebellion. In New York, Elder Taylor defended the Mormon people against some governmental powers who were trying to destroy them. He challenged the enemies of the Church “ ‘to prove that “Mormonism” is less moral, scriptural, philosophical; or that there is less patriotism in Utah than in any other part of the United States. We call for proof; bring on your reasons, gentlemen, if you have any; we shrink not from the investigation, and dare you to the encounter’ ” (B. H. Roberts, A Comprehensive History of the Church, 4:63).

As a result of public sentiment and legislation against the Church and against plural marriage, many men in the Church were imprisoned. Many others went into hiding to prevent imprisonment. John Taylor was the senior Apostle following the death of Brigham Young in 1877 until he became President of the Church himself in 1880. He with his counselors, George Q. Cannon and Joseph F. Smith, went into hiding in 1885, placing their trust in the Lord.

"9/11 was an inside job"

I saw a lot of President Obama souvenirs while on Oahu. They are proud and have every right to be. He was born there and the people there along with his mother and grandparents shaped him into what he is today. He's released the Bush Administration torture reports. I also saw a sign with a bumper sticker that said "9/11 was an inside job". So many Americans are shocked, in denial, or flat out rationalizing something many of us have known all along. The Bush Administration were indeed guilty of torture, cruel and unusual punishment, behaving in a way that we condemned Saddam Hussein of, and even death. There are many Democrats calling for blood. Here's my take: First, it's the tip of the iceberg, wait till they look deeper into 9/11. Second, with what time and enormous amount taxpayers money is President Obama expected to go after these crimes. It's getting to the point even the Republicans with single digit IQs are catching on that Bush was a criminal and Cheney will be burning in hell before the trial is over. They are ruined. They are more of an embarrassment to the GOP than Nixon and I think that the very next Republican President will issue pardons just like they did for Nixon. None of this old Administration will see the inside of a prison cell. But you can't erase memos that clearly state that these men were no better than terrorists. In fact, it maybe possible that they ARE terrorists. Keep watching, there is something seriously wrong with the 9/11 story. And the people of our country that died for nothing in this farce of a war and in 9/11 will never be brought back. The satisfaction of the truth may be all we can afford right now.
Update: I tried not to watch this before I wrote this blog because it's something I'm torn on but it's hard to dispute this either (except that I believe that there is much more to come):

Update #2: I still think that we don't know the extent of the crimes committed. I think that the divisiveness of our country was totally underscored by the stupid tea parties. I would really love to see these right wingnuts that trotted out the old tired accusations (i.e. President Obama's birth place, his OBVIOUS terrorist ties due to his name, his backbreaking taxes on the middle class (like these ANY of these nut jobs fall into the the tax bracket that WILL see an increase)) define facist. I have to admit there is some satisfaction in watching these loons highlight the insanity that is the GOP.

Are remakes EVER a good idea???

Okay maybe Batman was... oh and Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder came off a little pedophile-ish, but the Boston Tea party??.C'mon, it's been done and it was done well the first time. I hope all of the right wingnuts know their history well enough to know it was early colonists in Massachusetts protesting paying taxes to the British Government. The issue wasn't paying the tax, it was who they had to pay it to. They wanted to pay their taxes to their own government. Ultimately playing a big part in the Revolutionary War. So now we have all these lunatic far right wing fanatics dressing up as tea bags, early colonists, protesting the very government the ACTUAL brave disgruntled colonists fought to create. It's really been fairly amusing to me. But it seems like a parody of something wonderful in our country's history.
So my mom called me last night to tell me that her friend there had attended one of these tea parties. I was actually shocked because the population there is barely breaking 100 AND I would have pegged my mom's friend as a Dem. So I look to see how many are going on in Utah... Wow! I think these wingnuts and their leader Glenn Beck needs to remember that tea is against the Word of Wisdom. Pretending it's tea but drinking something else could be construed as "the appearance of evil". Get a ham, some funeral potatoes and a Jello salad and call it a costume/pot luck party. Leave the heroes in history alone.
Now the Governor of Texas wants to secede?? A civil war? A Revolutionary AND a Civil war??? Will they name their country Texas? They aren't legally allowed to secede the whole state, but they CAN break it up into 4 states and then they could leave the rogue American patriot sympathizers in a small corner they leave behind. The last American Civil War had much to do with where a man's place should be according to his skin color. I'm a bit disturbed that THAT is what this one would be about as well. Because we all know that you can "blah blah blah" all you want about taxes, less government, and socialism but the truth is you are a bigot. The President of the UNITED States of America is black and far more intelligent, moral, and inspiring than anyone you know or have ever encountered. You don't think he belongs there. He's forgotten his station. You still pass down the racial hatred to your children and act like it's something to be proud of. Like I said before, there are pirates, traitors, hate mongers and disloyal people in America. How many people would give anything to have the opportunities that we enjoy. Your racist legacy is something that will continue to be passed on and that is nothing to be proud of. Our future depends on the best and the brightest of our children. America is no longer a country of white supremacy or segregation, it was never meant to be and honestly, it never really was. But that all of these fanatics who are clinging to racial hatred is sad and dangerous. People speak of socialism like it's a plague, but the real sickness is the people who truly cling to some twisted idea of totalitarianism (look it up). Out of curiosity who would lead the new country called Texas? The current Governor or the previous President. And when you declare war against America, where will you get your troops? Over the fence? You definitely need a game plan.

For those of you who want a good laugh now the tax deadline has come and gone, here is a link to some various tea parties:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/searchG/?cx=partner-pub-3264687723376607%3Atlvacw-gkue&cof=FORID%3A11&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=tea+bag&sa.x=0&sa.y=0&sa=Search#1391

Sorry, I can't embed this for some reason but the stories are on the left hand side of the page and there are several pages of the different tea parties.

Also on this one feel free to tattle to my mom.

I'm Home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An entire day of travel, but I am home safe and sound. I spent about 4 hours in LA on layover, but the rest wasn't too bad.

Okay I'm on an Island and I'm slow on catching the news..

So the Somali pirates have a U.S. citizen... A smart one so we need him. Whoever is in charge of watching the pirates through the spyglass thing when Captain Phillips escaped temporarily should be thrown in the brig or something because as soon as he jumped we should have blown them out of the water. Is he the only crew member on there? (You can really answer me because I don't know.) I also think they should send the governor of Nevada to switch places with Phillips. Perhaps the pirates would like to hear a stupid Governor who can't take some responsibility for his own mistakes. They could give him advice. I mean, let's think of ways Nevada could raise money for it's residents (and I well know that Las Vegas is suffering. I think of my family there). They could legalize gambling, oh yeah, casino mecca. Prostitution?? Mustang Ranch (a modest example). Whatever, suck it up Jim Gibbons. Whining through the newspaper to the President is no more noble than threatening rape. Stop costing Nevada money.
They could also send the Rush and Beck to deal with it. Glenn Beck could pour gas on Rush (because the cost of gas plummets when the Dems are in office threatening the country with renewable resources). Save the gas though. Stick a wick in Limbaugh, light it and let the tallow burn til it hits the hot air. If you launch him at them he's blow like a Molotov Cocktail.
And President Obama...beware of states that think you need more experience or education before they bestow their worthless honorary degrees on you. They stink of bigotry or greed.
Tea parties, wingnuts, bigotry, and lack of respect. Somali pirates are no more sick and wrong than a good portion of Americans. You think that all of this anti-Obama talk is coming from honest people? People who have nothing to gain by riling the ignorant masses?? It's embarrassing.

Oh and btw, Glenn Beck, I wish you'd get excommunicated from our church. You are a despicable person selling your conversion story. Do you pay tithes on that dvd? Taxes? Who do you want to keep fighting these wars that Bush and company got us into? Maybe, just maybe, we're going to need all the citizens we can get to replace our soldiers that thought that they died in an honorable war.

International visits

I get the occasional international visitor, which I think is just the coolest thing ever. I've lost track, but I'm a small blog and didn't expect anyone outside of family and friends. But I have had close to 20 international visitors from totally different countries. Five of them came in just over the past 24 hours. Cool! Welcome.

Sea Life Park today!

Today has been the rainiest day so far, but it's more a misty sprinkle and so we haven't been inconvenienced by it especially since weather reports from home are more Christmas-like. We went to the Sea Life Park not far from Hanauma Bay. It wasn't on any of our Top Ten Lists in Oahu book, and having been to Sea World myself a few times could see it was nowhere near as nice. It always disturbs me to see small enclosures and when I get home and have a day I have a whole rant on aquariums with aiptasia, but that is a real vent. The Sea Life Park has recently changed ownership and maybe that will explain some of the weirdness, but overall I have cool stuff to say. We were put in this room and separated off in different groups according to which package we paid for. We originally chose the most expensive package, but the dolphin swim involved us floating and the dolphin pushing us by the feet into the air and we would dive back into the water. It sounded a bit too complicated for my kids and maybe even us. I decided the one step lower in price sounded better because the dolphin swim was a belly swim where the dolphin laid on it's back and we laid on it's tummy and it would pull us as we held it's fins. We (especially me) was SHOCKED that it wasn't a dolphin that we would be playing with, it was the only wholphin in the world (at least in captivity). Her name is Kekaimalu and I have to say it made up HUGELY for the no whales on the whale watching tour. She proved to be fun, friendly, and gentle. Apparently she's given birth three times and only the 3rd baby lived (2nd died after 9 years. Sadly.) Kekaimalu's mother an Atlantic bottle nose dolphin had a tryst with a false killer whale and we had the good fortune to play with her. We weren't allowed to take pictures, but they took pictures of each of us getting and giving her a kiss and dancing with her. Because we bought all of the pictures (not cheap) we got a free dvd of the experience. Somewhere along the line the ride was dropped altogether. I'm not sure if it was because of the size of our group, the fact we were running late, or that I'm pretty sure that there was a child born to a hyena in our group (I swear I saw 666 on that kids head). I was really disappointed and we messed up on my youngest child's t-shirt and can't do anything about it now. Hopefully I can resolve it online, even though there's no online store. It was a really great day. We got to handle a lot of little critters in a little stream, and no one told me before I tried to pull a shark back out from under a rock that you weren't supposed to touch them, but I saw it as it came out the other side and decided it was much larger than I guessed and I could have lost fingers. The aquarium was cool and I recognized many of the fish from local fish stores, snorkling, and online. (I even saw a school of Moorish Idols, Chris. I TOLD you they schooled :P). We got to play with a small sea turtle (within reason, as they are protected.) We saw a bunch of rays, I LOVE them. Some freaking huge cowries (which I am certain I couldn't have smuggled home in my bra (another long story). Penguins, seals, sea lions... It was all very cool. Over all a great day and I am loving the fact I saw a Wholphin.
Also my daughter surprised me twice with a coconut bra. She underestimated what size coconut would fit me the first time and no Arch. No pictures of that either.
I did find pictures of the Wholphin family online.

Kawili'Kai. Kekaimalu's daughter.

Kekaimalu and parents. Dad at top, mom in the middle and Kekaimalu on the bottom. The birth of a wholphin from a dolphin was a shock. But the color of her skin and the shape of her rostrum was very telling. Also a false killer whale has 44 teeth, a bottle nose dolphin has 88 and Kekaimalu has 66.

I nominate Charles from Chicago as head of the new and improved GOP!!!

Okay, this is what I'm talking about here. Listen to the call and follow the transcript. Rush finally gets to rip this guy a new one but only after he disconnects the call. Hmmm kinda Nazi if you ask me!!

LIMBAUGH: We're going to go to Chicago. This is Charles. Charles, thank you for waiting and for calling. Great to have you here. Hello.

CALLER: Thanks, Rush. Rush, listen, I voted Republican, and I didn't -- really didn't want to see Obama get in office. But, you know, Rush, you're one reason to blame for this election, for the Republicans losing.

First of all, you kept harping about voting for Hillary. The second big issue is the -- was the torture issue. I'm a veteran. We're not supposed to be torturing these people. This is not Nazi Germany, Red China, or North Korea. There's other ways of interrogating people, and you kept harping about it -- "It's OK," or "It's not really torture." And it was just more than waterboarding. Some of these prisoners were killed under torture.

And it just -- it was crazy for you to keep going on and on like Levin and Hannity and Hewitt. It's like you're all brainwashed.

And my last comment is, no matter what Obama does, you will still criticize him because I believe you're brainwashed. You're just -- and I hate to say it -- but I think you're a brainwashed Nazi. Anyone who could believe in torture just has got to be - there's got to be something wrong with them.

LIMBAUGH: You know --

CALLER: And I know Bush wanted to keep us safe and all of that, but we're not supposed to be torturing these people.

LIMBAUGH: Charles, if anybody is admitting that they're brainwashed it would be you.

CALLER: No, no, no, Rush. I don't think so.

LIMBAUGH: Charles. Charles, Charles --

CALLER: You, Hannity, Hewitt, and Levin are all brainwashed and you know it.

LIMBAUGH: -- you said -- you said at the beginning of your phone call --

CALLER: Yeah.

LIMBAUGH: -- that you didn't want Obama in there --

CALLER: That's right.

LIMBAUGH: -- but you voted for him because of me.

CALLER: I didn't vote for him. I voted for McCain. I voted Republican.

LIMBAUGH: Oh, so --

CALLER: I voted Republican.

LIMBAUGH: -- you're saying I turned people off to --

CALLER: You turned people off with all your -- all this "vote for Hillary" and all this BS, because you must think people are really stupid.

LIMBAUGH: That was Operation Chaos. That was to keep the --

CALLER: You -- no. It didn't work.

LIMBAUGH: -- chaos in the [unintelligible] of the Democrat primaries.

CALLER: It didn't work. And now what we have with you Hannity, Levin, and Hewitt: sour grapes. That's all we have. And believe me, I'm not -- I'm more to the right than I am to the left.

LIMBAUGH: Oh, of course, you are.

CALLER: I am, and that's --

LIMBAUGH: Of course, you are. You wouldn't be calling here with all these sour grapes if you weren't.

CALLER: Well, I'm so tired of listening to you --

LIMBAUGH: Oh, of course, you are.

CALLER: -- go on and on with this -- you've been brainwashed.

LIMBAUGH: I don't know of anybody who died from torture. I do not ever --

CALLER: We are not supposed to torture people.

LIMBAUGH: I do not ever --

CALLER: Do you remember World War II, the Nazis? The Nuremberg Trials?

LIMBAUGH: I --

CALLER: Do you remember the Nuremberg Trials?

LIMBAUGH: Charles --

CALLER: Klaus Barbie?

LIMBAUGH: Charles, let me say --

CALLER: Huh?

LIMBAUGH: Barack Obama --

CALLER: What's the matter with you?

LIMBAUGH: Barack --

CALLER: You never even served in a military.

LIMBAUGH: Barack Obama is --

CALLER: I served in the Marine Corps and the Army.

LIMBAUGH: Charles, Barack Obama is president of the United States today because of stupid, ignorant people who think like you do. You pose -- you and your ignorance are the most expensive commodity this country has. You think you know everything. You don't know diddly-squat.

You call me a Nazi? You call me somebody who supports torture and you want credibility on this program? You know, you're just plain embarrassing and ludicrous. But it doesn't surprise me that you're the kind of Republican that our last candidate attracted. Because you're no Republican at all based on what the hell you've said here.

(This came from mediamatters.org)
Rush has not figured out that his stupid "Operation Chaos" thing actually helped the Democrats?? Operation Chaos actually is better defined the moment McCain picked Palin as Veep. And that ball just keeps on rolling. I personally find it pretty enlightening to listen to Bristol's baby daddy. I agree with President Obama that family shouldn't be fair game, but she trotted them all out like a dog and pony show. Now they won't keep to the script? Sad for you, young Levi. You saw what happened when you piss off Palin in Troopergate. Your son is now a pawn in Palin's twisted ambitions. Good luck with that. If you move to Russia you could watch him play in the yard, though!

My philosophy on Hawaii.. Oahu at least...

So I'm here for my 3rd day (not counting the half when I first got here) and I have paid more attention to little things. This is the first vacation I've had in four years that is by the ocean and I'm not in a tent. I can also strike up odd friendships in no time at all. It baffles my children. On our way in to Turtle Bay to the west toward Haleiwa we stopped at a fruit stand. (I am not at all concerned with eating out and discovered that I can live on the fresh fruit and prawns forever). This fruit stand is run by a very old woman. It was raining and we were soaked. She cut our pineapple and mango for us and told us how much harder it was for her right now because they aren't so busy. They lease land to grow the fruit. I also notice the other stands going up much later in the day and coming down much sooner. Inclement weather factors into their timing, they are younger people, who work in shifts and the stand is much nicer. I assured her we'd be back for more pineapple soon and refused change when we paid. She was crying as we pulled away. My kids noticed too. We have become accustomed to poverty and tourism in Mexico. We were shocked in Mexico at the modest and poor places people live in and how some of them are forced to make a living any way they can even small children and all day long. We were more shocked to see it here. This is America, paradise, not some poor country where the government profits from it's residents. Why isn't this elderly woman retired and taken care of after a lifetime of very hard labor? Also our maid is baffled that I use the towels and sheets conservatively and change sheets myself and take out the trash. I told her that it's the least we can do since she's cleaning when we leave and still at it when we return. She's so generous to us as is everyone here that she'll receive a hefty tip when we leave.
At the pool when my kids and I were on the water slide there was a changing of life guards. The woman who had been there was very cautious and strict but as soon as she left a young Hawaiian guy took her place. He said "Okay, NOW we're going to have fun." He was far less strict and let us ride on our tummies and probably would have let us go in a train, but we didn't want to get him in trouble. He asked me where I was from on one of my go arounds and I told him Utah. He said I just got back from serving a mission there (LDS. We are good at I.D.ing fellow members. Even rogue ones.) I asked where and was shocked to discover it was in the town I shop in every Tuesday. He asked where I live and he said he is going there in October to visit a friend who is going to the University in my town and also the University I attended. I was reading in a book we picked up on the way here about top 10 recommended things to do (lot's of lists for different things.) and top of one of the lists was the Polynesian Cultural Center. It's next to BYU Hawaii and it explained that the LDS church runs it as a place to experience the different Polynesian cultures and gives students from these different islands jobs and scholarship opportunities so they can attend BYU. I believe the only way you can attend if you are live on the mainland and possibly other countries is if you are accepted and only for a short time, like a semester. It's truly an opportunity for these people who want to go to college but can't really afford to go anywhere else and they can share their cultures with the visitors of Oahu. We went there last trip but chose to do other activities this time. The book also mention that there is a high concentration of members of the LDS church here.
Of course I also notice the genuine pride, among the islanders, of our President. We shopped at the Aloha Stadium swap meet today and ALMOST made it out without another shirt that I won't be allowed to wear around my family or inlaws, but this was too good to pass up. There are bumper stickers, pictures, and all KINDS of art and souvenirs showing their obvious pride in having had President Obama come from this state. There is a great deal of military here aside from Pearl Harbor and I notice a great deal of that in bumper stickers and suggested site seeing. They are proud to be Americans here. And proud to serve our country.
We haven't encountered anyone who lives here that is rude or unpleasant. Drivers are courteous and allow us to cut in line when we get in the wrong lane. The beauty of Hawaii isn't just in the ocean, the beaches, and scenery, it's in the people as well. In my opinion it explains a lot about our President. His patience, his friendly attitude, respect for the military, veterans, and families of those who have served or lost someone to war. I have a feeling that his service toward the community and his love of the older generation is something he learned not only from his mother and his grandparents but on this beautiful island as well.
I've also noticed THIS huge difference as well.. I think that the members of the LDS faith here have learned that Republican isn't synonymous moral conservative. I've noticed this in other states too, especially in Vegas. You can have liberal and accepting attitudes no matter your politics. No one has the market cornered on "christian" behavior (not that I understand the Christianity thing in politics anyway since we believe in freedom of religion. Plus christian christian and political christian is no way NEAR the same thing).
Anyway, just something I've noticed this time around. It's been a great time. Tomorrow is riding dolphin day!! YAY!!!

Tin Foil Hat Society in mass panic

Certified or certifiable members of the Loony Freak Brigade (Glenn Beck, Michele Bachmann, Sean Hannity...Rush is missing, he must really be moving to a smaller mansion)are freaking out and as always they can count on Jon Stewart to speak to them in small words and a calm voice. But my usual John Stewart language bleeps apply:

Byodo-in Temple

So today I got to do something that I wanted to do soooo bad. Last time I was here my husband was terrified of getting lost so he wouldn't go to the Byodo-in Temple. I have this crazy fascination with all things Japanese. It's hard to explain but there are certain movies I love that are set in Japan and it's so beautiful but beneath the surface there is such ugliness. I guess that happens everywhere but this is different for me. I'm glad now that we saw it on THIS trip and not the last because it meant more. The pictures I saw of it didn't even come close to the actual beauty and neither did the ones we took. And the feeling is indescribable, the reverence. Anyway here are a few pictures, but we took a million. Also just in case you didn't know or didn't remember, I don't post pictures of my kids online. There are pictures of the whole family, but I don't want their info online at all.

2 pics from the resort.

Day 2 in Paradise...

We called to check our whale watching tour and it was canceled due to impending bad weather. Good news is that I called early and they had space on their earlier trip. So we headed out. We had to stop three times to pee (and I'll give you a hint, it's not me NOR my children who have to pee every 5 minutes) so as we pulled up the catamaran was sailing away... Good news, they hadn't aligned the catamaran properly to get out of their harbor so they came back and we jumped on. So for 2 hours we sailed along which I would gladly spend my lifetime doing. I tell you I was born in the wrong place. I'm a water baby. The weird guy that was the captain was behind me telling the tourists all of this trivia about whales, half of which wasn't true. I know this because I spent my early years preparing to become a cetologist then he'd point randomly and say ooo did you see that blow?? Ooooh a tail wave, while the guy dealing with the sails and was actually kinda hot was looking for real whales. Then it happened.. My daughter started to puke (which I anticipated, because though she would like to fulfill my dream of marine biology, she has motion sickness and this was her first time on a boat). I had a bag so I got it to her just in time while my OTHER daughter starts freaking out because a real whale breached. Good news is, my other daughter was feeling all better then and we crawled out on the net thingy on the front of the boat and rode on our tummies the rest of the trip. It was sooo pretty and the timing turned out good because it's about to rain again. We will be out playing in it when it comes.
Luggage isn't here yet but the good news is I have openly got to vent to actual people 3 times now. Bad news is that the automated guy doesn't know what I am saying so he makes me spell. My kids have learned how to spell unspeakable words and they transfer you to the real person faster. Turtle Bay is as always the best place in the world. They are so nice and look at us sadly when we walk by because the luggage hasn't come yet....
Stay tuned, I'm thinking a long dormant volcano on Oahu is going to blow, but my daughter is convinced it still has something to do with the Campbells. She has that fiery crazy grudge thing that can only come from a Scot! :o)
